Back in 2019, I submitted a novel I spent two years writing to quite a few literary agents in the UK.
Most of them never even bothered responding, then I got a very strange email from one agent who told me the excerpt from my novel was one of the funniest things he’d read for some time, but that he wouldn’t know how to market it to a publisher. I found this a bizarre thing to say. Surely when a literary agent tells you that your novel excerpt is “the funniest thing that I’ve read for quite a while”, he’d want to read the entire manuscript and maybe consider forwarding it on to a publisher?
It wasn’t a high brow work of literature but a Nick Hornbyesque novel about a man struggling to cope with a relationship breakdown while also struggling not to have a nervous breakdown working in a morally degenerate comprehensive school in England. A far more successful writer pointed out to me that I was likely what it would be difficult to market as opposed to the novel. One quick google search and articles that I have written would reveal to the literary agent that I hold a range of conservative views not very fashionable amongst the cultural gatekeepers that seem to dominate the publishing industry.

Purely from a commercial point of view, this has got to be hugely self-defeating for a publisher.

What is the obsession with graphic novels? They’re comic books. Comics are for children.
I don't know if that's true or not, but I later thought this person is a child trying to protect herself.
